After five years of leadership, first as Chair and then as Executive Director, Asim Hussain will be stepping down from his role at the Green Software Foundation. While we will miss Asim's leadership, we are grateful for his vision and direction, which have shaped the Foundation into the thriving global community driven by our members.
Over the past months, Asim has worked closely with the Steering Committee to plan a leadership transition for the Foundation’s next chapter. The Steering Committee has selected a successor, and we will introduce them to the community as soon as the transition is complete.
During the transition period, Todd Moore (SVP Community Operations, the Linux Foundation) will serve as Interim Executive Director and a point of support for governance matters until the incoming Executive Director assumes the role. The Foundation's leadership team, Jamie A Cowan, Russell Trow, and Sean Mcilroy, will continue to guide the Foundation’s programs and operations, maintaining stability and continuity for the community.
What GSF has built
Under Asim's leadership, the GSF has grown into a global consortium of leading technology organizations working to reduce the environmental impact of software and hardware. We developed foundational standards, including the ISO-approved Software Carbon Intensity (SCI) standard, the Impact Framework, and the Carbon Aware SDK, tools now adopted by practitioners worldwide. Our community has expanded to over 130,000 trained Green Software Practitioners, and our membership includes several Fortune Global 500 firms.
"When we started this Foundation, the idea that software had a carbon footprint was still a hard sell. That's no longer the case. I'm proud of what this community has built together, and I'm confident that the next chapter will take it even further."
What’s next
"Asim's vision laid the groundwork for everything the Green Software Foundation is today. We conducted a rigorous search and are excited about the leader we've selected to take the Foundation forward. They bring a long relationship with the Foundation, and a deep understanding and commitment to our work."
The Green Software Foundation remains committed to building a trusted ecosystem of people, standards, tooling, and best practices for sustainable software and hardware, and to our vision of a future where software has zero harmful environmental effects. Our work continues, and we’re excited for what's ahead.
